In Berlin 1942, Hilde is a member of an anti-Nazi group. She falls in love with another member, Hans. The two spend a summer together until they get caught by the Gestapo and Hilde is imprisoned, eight months pregnant.

Horst Krause picks up a girl on the wintry country road and brings her back to the "Kinderhaus Sonnenschein" in the neighboring village. This sets a series of events in motion that brings a few guests, big and small, to the country inn in Schönhorst during the Advent season.

In the motley final-year class 13e at Kepler School in Neukölln, children who have moved to the western part of the city legally as well as border crossers who live in East Berlin but commute to the West every day come together for lessons every day. After the school-leavers had completed their written exams in July 1961, they faced their oral exams after the summer vacation in September. But when the Berlin Wall was built in August, Berlin was divided and torn apart from one day to the next - including class 13e. The students from the eastern part of the city quickly have to make a difficult decision: should they attempt to cross the border or throw their dreams of the future to the wind?

The story follows a number of protagonists who are hiding from truths or escaping them, lying to each other in a circle of deceit. Meanwhile therapy patients offer glimpses of truth that underscore the increasing web of lies whose consequences will eventually engulf the protagonists and force them into confronting their truths. If the story has a message it is: you can't keep a lie a secret forever.

Tommy, the Englishman, has worked in the Spaetkauf for years, selling the wares and dealing with arguing couples, lost tourists, drunken locals, late night discussions, participating in heated basketball games, visiting late night clubs and suffering hangovers. A kaleidoscope of people offering glimpses into their lives, hopes and thoughts, weaving a tapestry of local life.

Helin, on her father's death, travels from Tunceli, Turkey to Berlin to meet her mother and sister.

After a 15-year absence, a 30-year-old architect returns to his grandmother's village to fulfill her wish for an urn burial.
