Ditte is born out of wedlock and lives as a young girl with her old beloved grandmother. As an illegitimate child she is teased in school and more than anything in the world she wants a father. When steady - utterly reliable - herring dealer Lars Petter shows up and tells her that he is marrying Ditte's mother, the little girl is very happy. Now Ditte must take care of three new sisters and brothers but gets nothing but complaints from her ungrateful, selfish mother. But the little girl finds consolation and support in both her sisters and brothers and Lars Petter.

Director Albrechtsen, who heads a large construction company, is a tough and ruthless businessman. He does not shy away from dubious transactions when they serve his interests, and it is precisely on this basis that he comes into sharp conflict with his employee of many years, civil engineer Humlegaard, and the conflict leads to Humlegaard leaving the company. In the film, we now follow the far-reaching consequences of Albrechtsen's brutal actions.

On the deck of the Aalborg boat, the young girl Elly stands and stares at Copenhagen's towers and roofs, shining in the red glow of the afternoon sun. Elly has been lucky, she thinks: a maid in a boarding house in Nansensgade, her own room and a good salary. However, Elly is quickly disappointed. The boarding house is dirty, and after advances from one of the boarders, she packs her suitcase. She meets Agnes, a girl from home. Agnes takes Elly under her wing and gets her a place in a hotel and offers her half of her attic room. Elly feels safe with Agnes, but then one day a young man crosses her path.
