Ivan Lapikov

With World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution, and the Russian Civil War as backdrop, it's an old-fashioned, blood-and-guts narrative, filled with earthly humor and a wealth of colorful characters. The story concerns the fluctuating fortunes of Grigory Melekhov, a young Cossack who is both a hero and a victim of the uprising.

A soldier returns from the army with his young wife. A local heartbreaker and a drunkard, an imposing man who does not care about anything, takes a fancy to her. He draws the young man into his company, and one evening the wife finds her spouse drowned in a puddle. After some time, she offers the heartbreaker to drink champagne together (and he has previously made her very explicit offers) and tries to kill him, but instead gets a fatal stabbing herself.

The difficult fate of a man who went through the war, the horror of Hitler’s and Stalin’s camps, but retained fortitude, decency and purity.

An old dacha in the Moscow suburbs brought all the relatives together. Lyudmila Kozlova arrived from the city with her son, and everything would have been fine, except that the dacha itself is the subject of a dispute between the two sides of the family. Lyudmila unsuccessfully tries to persuade the owner to sell her the dacha, but to no avail. A conflict of contradictions brews, which seems to be resolved by the will of fate.
