Folklore journalist Lu Xiaosheng visits the Liansheng Paper Effigy Shop to investigate a strange tale. Twenty years ago, Qiao Yuanyuan died unjustly, and a paper figure made for her burial was said to bring her spirit back to kill her father. Only the craftsman’s apprentice knows the truth.

'Guardian of the Palace' tells the story of a time when a plague spreads in Heishun (Blackwater) Town during the warring warlords, and Tianya, Wunian and Jiujiu set out on a treasure hunt to find the Golden Moon Gem that cures the plague. The warlord Feng Pei Chuan was trailing them and tried to take the gems for himself, but Tianya and the others managed to subdue Feng Pei Chuan, reclaim the gems and save the people.

Penniless and desperate for money, a married couple and a fuerdai cook up a fake kidnap for ransom scheme among themselves. Married couple Pu Tong and Mi La are as ordinary as can be.
