Mason Fowler will be defending his belt for the third time against Bellator heavyweight champion and former light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader. A former NCAA wrestling standout, Bader presents a different challenge than previous defenses. Also on the card, Craig Jones will face Vinny Magalhaes, who are both decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, along with former judo Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii. Fowler won all of his previous defenses in the overtime ruleset.

UFC Fight Night 136: Hunt vs. Oleinik was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on September 15, 2018 at Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Moscow, Russia. While not officially announced, the promotion was initially targeting a heavyweight bout between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabrício Werdum and Aleksei Oleinik to serve as the main event. However, on May 22, Werdum was flagged for a potential USADA doping violation and his status moving forward became unknown. On July 19, the promotion announced that a bout between the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner and former interim title challenger Mark Hunt and Oleinik would serve as the event headliner.

The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale (also known as The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale) was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on July 7, 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The event was headlined by a lightweight bout between Michael Johnson and former WSOF Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje. The welterweight finals of The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption took place at the event.

UFC 186: Johnson vs. Horiguchi was a mixed martial arts event held on April 25, 2015, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

UFC on Fox 17: dos Anjos vs. Cowboy 2 was a mixed martial arts event that took place on December 19, 2015 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. This was the last UFC event in 2015. The event was headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between current champion Rafael dos Anjos and top contender Donald Cerrone. Dos Anjos won their first fight at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 by unanimous decision.

UFC Fight Night 41: Munoz vs. Mousasi was a mixed martial arts event held on May 31, 2014, at O2 World in Berlin, Germany. The card was headlined by a middleweight bout between Gegard Mousasi and Mark Muñoz. This event was the first of two that took place on May 31, 2014, with The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale: Miocic vs. Maldonado being the other making it only the second time in UFC history that they have hosted two events in one day.

UFC Fight Night 58: Machida vs. Dollaway was a mixed martial arts event held at the Ginásio José Corrêa in Barueri, Brazil on December 20, 2014. The event was headlined by a middleweight bout between C. B. Dollaway and Lyoto Machida.

UFC Fight Night 38: Shogun vs. Henderson 2 was a mixed martial arts event held on March 23, 2014, at the Ginásio Nélio Dias in Natal, Brazil. The event was headlined by the anticipated rematch between mixed martial arts legends Maurício Rua and Dan Henderson. Henderson won their first encounter back in November 2011 at UFC 139 via unanimous decision in a bout lauded by many MMA pundits as the Fight of the Year for 2011 and one of the best bouts in the history of the UFC.
