Naoto wants to end his relationship with his stepfather Seiji legally. With this purpose in mind, he visits Seiji’s home for the first time in a long while. He hasn’t been there since his mother Yuri passed away. At his stepfather’s home, Seiji hands Naoto a cellphone. Suddenly, Naoto hears his mom’s voice on the cellphone.

Suzuki Koichi, a 30-something hikikomori shut-in, allows his mother to dotingly tend to his needs. When she discovers that Koichi has killed himself, the shock is so great she loses consciousness and her memory of that day.

Following the death of his wife professor Kyoichi leads a solitary life by the sea. A stray cat called Mii, who was being fed by his wife, not only continues to drop by, but also seems to be visiting the altar Kyoichi has set up for his deceased wife. While uncomfortable with the cat and its visits, he nonetheless takes up a search when Mii goes missing. The endeavour connects him with the town's folk and reveals that he is not alone.
