Darlene Glória

Following the projects of modernization of Brazil in the 70s, a busy road in the nearly-desert area of Brazil is detoured to a brand new highway, and a known roadside brothel called “Beiço de Estrada” (“Lower Lip of the Road”) faces its decadence. The owner of the brothel, Madame Lili (Darlene Glória) is abandoned by her 3 daughters who worked in the house, but they left 2 kids for her to take care of: Brás (Rique Messias) and Conceição (Luana Valentin). Brás spends his day digging holes in the road to break the few trucks that cross the road, so they can stop at their house. Conceição is kept hidden when a customer comes because her grandmother has big plans for her: to marry her with a good man, so the curse of prostitution can end in the family. Meanwhile, Meota (Jackson Antunes), an old truck driver, returns frequently to “Beiço de Estrada” to win the heart of little Conceição, while dodging her grandmother.

Caio is 40 years old and lives in the Rio de Janeiro's countryside, where he owns a scrap-metal yard. On Christmas' Eve, he goes to the capital to visit his family and friends. Finally he will be able to meet a man he has not seen for a long time: himself.

In Northeastern Brazil, twelve-year-old Maria is sold to have a better life as a housemaid. However, Maria is resold and sent to a brothel in the Amazon gold fields and put to work by the despicable Saraiva.

A group of friends in Sao Paulo see each other regularly in different venues of this huge metropolis, and act as their own de-facto family. They are similar in many ways, all upper middle class professionals between 28 and 32 years of age, and very conscious of their psyche and lives. The diversity within the group however, is also remarkable. It's made up about half men and half women. The men are the most diverse, ranging from your average guy looking for love to an Afro-Brazilian womanizing rich playboy, to a conflicted homosexual, heir to a business empire. It is the friendship (Amizade) and bond between these people that the film exposes, and at the same time it explores the different personalities of this apparently homogeneous, but actually psychologically diverse group of Sao Paulo yuppies. They stick together "'til friendship should ever separate them"
