FRAGMENT | Bedridden mine owner Werner dies of an accidental opium overdose and his foster daughter is suspected of killing him. The mine owner’s friend Hard was in prison for theft, and his daughter Erna was therefore in Werner’s care. Hard escaped from prison and found Werner on his deathbed. With the best of intentions, he soothed his old friend’s pain with opium, but unfortunately too generously. Now everyone suspects Erna except Werner’s son Alf, who must prove her innocence. Following some dodgy dealings, stockbroker Saccard is determined to pull himself out of the gutter and regain is reputation. Detective Barker has his work cut out for him when his red-haired nanny, Kate Blond, turns out to be a master thief in disguise. Barker’s close friends are a wealthy count and countess who has recently purchased a valuable piece of jewellery at an auction. With a poisoned sewing needle, Kate knocks the countess out and steals the jewellery. She sets the countess’ clock back an hour so the nanny-job is a bulletproof alibi when Barker investigates the case. Barker is at a loss until his trained eyes spot a red hair at the crime scene. When Ernst's engagement with beautiful Henny is announced at a costume ball Hugo he gets furious. Observed by his valet he is calmed down. Hugo's valet see's his opportunity to strengthen his position. The film was banned in Denmark. Instead it opened in Finland.
