The circus clown Joe Higgins is scouted by a world famous artist agent, who promises him fame and fortune. Joe takes the offer on one condition: His fiancèe Daisy and her parents are coming with him. Gross misunderstandings result in the young actor Jean leaving his wife and child. Years later, the family meets again in the theatre. Jean enters the stage as Pjerrot, whilst his wife and their daughter sit in the audience. The daughter slips behind the stage unnoticed, where suddenly a fire breaks out. FRAGMENT | Bedridden mine owner Werner dies of an accidental opium overdose and his foster daughter is suspected of killing him. The mine owner’s friend Hard was in prison for theft, and his daughter Erna was therefore in Werner’s care. Hard escaped from prison and found Werner on his deathbed. With the best of intentions, he soothed his old friend’s pain with opium, but unfortunately too generously. Now everyone suspects Erna except Werner’s son Alf, who must prove her innocence.
