An American actor in Tokyo struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese 'rental family' agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients' worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality.

In the coastal region of Shonan, a young man enlists the help of a eccentric local pet detective to search for his missing pet cat. When the man is unable to pay for the detective's help, he joins the unusual agency to pay off the debt.

In Tokyo, lonely patrons pay to sleep ("soine") with someone. Massage, cuddle, sleep… for comfort and nothing more than the warm embrace of another. Tasuku, a young man fresh out of a relationship, starts a new job as one of the cuddlers. He's nervous and reticent, but soon finds himself with a procession of clients, male as well as female. In his unique position as their companion, he finds himself privy to the true selves they keep closeted. Tender performance and contemplative writing elevate an exploration of the human need for comfort and tenderness, while learning to be true to oneself.

Minoru falls ill with a heart ailment, but luckily finds a donor and undergoes a transplant. However, after he has married his co-worker and had a child, he discovers that the blood infusion received during his transplant was contaminated with HIV.
