Shimizu Misora has failed repeatedly to find a job. By a strange coincidence, she meets funeral planner Urushibara Reiji, who works for the funeral company Bando Kaikan. This leads her to begin working as an intern at Bando Kaikan. She is mentored by Urushibara, but he is strict with her training and this causes Shimizu to feel discouraged. Soon, Shimizu's discouragement turns into admiration for Urushibara. His manners and sympathetic actions towards the deceased and the bereaved family impress her. She decides to become a funeral planner.

Two brothers start working as benshi narrators of silent films in a cinema in the early 20th century. This premise is the jumping-off point for an epic family saga that follows the protagonists and their descendants through wars and technological developments.

In February, 2020, a luxury cruise ship carrying 3,700 people arrives in Yokohama Port. One passenger, who disembarked in Hong Kong, was confirmed to have the new coronavirus. The coronavirus has since spread rapidly on the cruise ship. More than 100 passengers complain of symptoms. The DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) is called to the port to respond. DMAT is specialized in responding to natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. They do not have experience or training in dealing with new virus outbreaks. Hideharu Yuki, who is a leader in DMAT, and government official Nobutaka Tatematsu command the cruise ship situation at the headquarters. Doctor Yukiyoshi Sendo and members of DMAT, including Haruto Sanada, decided to board the ship to deal with the situation.

This film is adapted from the novel of the same name, which tells the story of a new writer, Kayo Nakajima, who debuted with the worst debut in history by winning an award with a former idol. Afterwards, she was caught in a series of troubles, such as "having her single volume of books blocked from publication", "quarreling with a well-known writer", and "being betrayed by the editor".However, eventually, Kayo gradually opened up a path of her own with her ambition and wonderful creativity.
