12-year-old Marina runs away from home: she wants to find a way to cure her dog Taiya, her only true friend, who has not eaten or drunk for two weeks. Marina finds Dr. Gaf, an unsociable veterinarian with an unusual gift: he knows how to communicate with animals. Gaf manages to cure Taya, but at night she is abducted along with other dogs from Dr. Gaf's shelter. Behind this is a company that needs stray animals for illegal experiments on them. Gaf and Marina go in search of their shaggy friends. A variety of animals will help them in this, from pigeons and rats to boa constrictors and skunks.

The movie is based on Zakhar Prilepin's autobiographical novella "The Forest". The story focuses on the father and son who spend every summer in the village of Isttsy, where they raft down the local Istya River. They have done so for several years, but this time things go astray: a harmless adventure turns into a real disaster. Much later the grown-up son remembers his father through the lens of the past years.
