The Loves of Madame du Barry was the American title of the 1935 British operetta I Give My Heart, based on the stage musical The Du Barry. German actress Gitta Alpar stars as Jeanne, the young 18th century Parisian milliner who sleeps her way to the uppermost rungs of French aristocracy, emerging at last as the glamorous Madame du Barry, mistress of Louis XV (Owen Nares). Refusing to gloss over du Barry's sexual peccadilloes (as previous films with Norma Talmadge and Dolores del Rio had done), the film presents the "heroine" as a whore, pure and simple-or, on second thought, not so pure and simple! Particularly troublesome for American censors was a scene in which du Barry is depicted as a resident of a bawdy house. Otherwise, The Loves of Madame du Barry is standard historical-drama fare, allowing dozens of top European actors to play "dress-up" for 90 minutes.

Operetta star Gitta Alpar plays a singer engaged for a performance at the Savoy Hotel, where she mistakes Baron von Wollheim for a waiter. But the baron is content to play the game for a while and changes his role with the real waiter. Of course the singer is quite happy when she discovers the real identity of the baron, but now she mistakes him for a thief, as her necklet has gone missing. Further complications arise when the baron's cousin Mary, a composer, arrives at the hotel and wants a music publisher to listen to her songs.

In a small Hungarian village, a priest discovers a girl named Gitta who can sing beautifully. He takes Gitta with him and turns her into a celebrated revue star. After a quarrel with the priest, she runs away and meets a young composer named Peter, who does not know that she is a successful singer.

Eve's emotions are torn between two European princes, lifelong rivals who happen to be brothers. Eve prefers the nicer of the two princes, but this doesn't stop the other from aggressively stepping up his courtship. When the less agreeable of the two monarches takes control of the throne, he orders Eve to make an immediate choice between himself and his brother.
