A young man, unsuccessful in love, manages to leave his body and tours Paris, disembodied and invisible, playing practical jokes: a row of coats walks off from a hotel cloakroom; an unattended taxi drives itself away; a row of top hats appears on the pavement.

The film takes place on two time levels: first in contemporary France and then in the time of Louis XV. in the 18th century. Lucienne is a young, dynamic woman who, although she loves the chief engineer of her uncle Abel Fernay’s car factory, is forced to marry an unloved man, a noble businessman.

To fulfill her Father's wish, Grand Duchess Aurora (Huguette Duflos) is forced into an unhappy marriage with Grand Duke Rudolph (Henry Houry). He prepares to leave for the Congo but is murdered by his own brother (Georges Vaultier). Aurora goes to Paris with her father and, there, is told on the phone of her husband's death. After returning to the Kingdom, she meets a tutor (Jaque Catelain) who falls in love with her..

An eight part ciné-novel (episodic film) set during the French Revolution, telling the story of the Dauphin's childhood in Versailles, his life at the Conciergerie during the Revolution, and his untimely death.
