A former policeman turns full-time robber and goes on a downward spiral of crime in 1970s Rome.

Francesco is an entrepreneur in the building industry. His company is near to collapse if it doesn't win a deal to build a new school complex. It needs at least 60 million liras to participate to the deal, but all the banks refuse to lend the money. A corrupt bank employee introduces him to Claudio, apparently an assistant of Sergio, Francesco's old school friend. Sergio is an accountant available to lend Francesco the money he needs. Francesco wins the deal, but soon he discovers that Claudio is not what he says.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a junior resident takes an interest in a newly-arrived patient, a young Italian woman who has mysteriously developed schizophrenia. To identify the causes of her condition, he employs psychoanalytic methods to dig into her sexual past, despite objections by the old-fashioned chief physician.

Two stage actors leave on a tournée, but there's a matter to be settled: one has become the lover of the other's girlfriend and since they are very good friends, cannot bring himself to tell him.

Young Betty Pellegrino (Orla Conforti) is a strong-minded 13-year-old, left on her own to deal with life in the poorer districts of an industrialized Turin. Street life alternates with bouts in the reformatory, and Betty's prospects for a decent life seem fairly dim in spite of her consistently ready wit and ability to take whatever life hands out. Then she meets a social worker willing to add Betty to her already heavy case load. Maybe there is some hope after all, as two against the world double Betty's odds.
