In 1873, brave men known as the New Latvians held the first-ever Latvian song festival under the watchful eye of oppressive censorship. This massive celebration, featuring 1,003 singers – both men and women – changed the course of the nation’s history. It stands as a unique example of non-violent resistance in the fight for freedom against imperialism, led by Latvia’s entrepreneurs, writers, publicists and ordinary villagers.

Would-be bride and groom Weronika and Łukasz decide to give themselves a second chance and invite their family to the wedding and reception in a seaside town. Among the invited guests are Wanda and Tadeusz – with their dog, Mirelka, and also a divorcee, Małgorzata, accompanied by her much younger partner, Jan , and her mother. A village in Mazowsze, 1943. Two teenage boys, Janek and Staszek, find two young Jews hiding on a farm. They soon realize that the boys, Abram and Chaim, are their age and are the sons of a respected pharmacist who lived in a nearby town before the war. They were the only survivors of the anti-Jewish pogrom led by the Germans in the nearby forest. In spite of the deadly threat, Janek and Staszek decide to hide the boys and keep it a secret.

The fate of three Catholic priests were linked together through tragic events a few years back. Every year, on the anniversary of the catastrophe, they gather to celebrate their survival of the tragedy. Lisowski works at a curia in a big city, building his career while dreaming of the Vatican. Standing in his way, Mordowicz, the archbishop, a luxurious church dignitary who is making use of his political connections to build the largest sanctuary in Poland. Trybus, is a parish priest and often submits to human weaknesses. Kukuła also is not doing well. Despite his passion for faith, he is losing the trust of his flock. Soon, through new tragic events, the paths of the three priests will cross again.

In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with the Russian Army closing in from the east and the Allied Expeditionary Force attacking from the west. In Berlin, capital of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany will still achieve victory and orders his generals and advisers to fight to the last man. When the end finally does come, and Hitler lies dead by his own hand, what is left of his military must find a way to end the killing that is the Battle of Berlin, and lay down their arms in surrender.
