The story of fifteen-year-old Renata, who lives in a small apartment with her divorced parents, takes place during the socialist era of the 1980s. She takes revenge on them by getting into more and more trouble. She gets drunk, listens to Radio Free Europe, and rebels somewhat clumsily against the political situation. But when things get really bad, she allows herself to be rescued by her father, a member of the secret police, with a mixture of admiration and contempt. Weaned on this confused world of adults, she clumsily stands on her own two feet. Only when she falls in love with a boy she doesn't want at a dance and loses her virginity to a boy she doesn't really know, only after various emotional escapades, does she find a certain indulgence for her eternally quarreling parents...

Two families, Sebkovi and Krausovi, are celebrating Christmas, but not everyone is in a good mood. The teenage kids think that their fathers are totally stupid, and the fathers are sure that their children are nothing more than rebels, hating anything they say.

Although he likes the shepherdess, he sends her father to prison for his grumbling and aversion to senseless military conquests. He says he will release him when someone defeats him, the prince. Desperate, Bětka seeks solace at the apple oak tree, where she suddenly receives not only a miraculous caress, but also advice. She will be helped by someone whose head is fiery like an autumn tree, half gold and half scarlet...

The young poet Frederik confides in his shadow about his love for Princess Claudia. After all, who could be a more loyal and discreet friend? Frederik trusts his shadow implicitly, so one day he asks it to visit the castle in his place and see how the princess is doing. But the shadow also falls in love with Claudia, and from that moment on, he is obsessed with the idea of taking everything away from the poet. He already has his voice, he has stolen his verses, and even his appearance! All he needs to do now is take away his beloved girl. He almost succeeds.
