The story of Cheong Ah Ling or Alim, is about an upright young man who is good friends with a child, Umar. Alim is well-liked by the villagers, who are mostly Malays, because of his friendliness and easygoing nature, even though he is a Peranakan Chinese. Although already 35 years old, he is good friends with Umar who is only 9 years old. Alim's and Umar's houses are close to each other but separated by a river. Therefore, Alim has to cycle using a rather distant road route every day to meet Umar. Alim and Umar think of an alternative to build a wooden bridge to cross the river that separates their homes. In fact, the idea came about after he had to use the long route to take his mother to the hospital for treatment, which took a long time. However, their idea is not accepted by the village chief, Pak Samad.
