Three Chaplin silent comedies "A Dog's Life", "Shoulder Arms", and "The Pilgrim" are strung together to form a single feature length film. Chaplin provides new music, narration, and a small amount of new connecting material. "Shoulder Arms" is now described as taking place in a time before "the atom bomb".

Industrialist James Sheridan, Sr., once a laborer, insists on moulding the careers of his three sons; however, he loses James, Jr., in a flood disaster, and Roscoe suffers a mental breakdown. Realizing his mistake, he begins to insure the happiness of the third son, Bibbs, by bringing him together with Mary, the girl he loves.

A young man falls for a young woman on his trip home; unbeknownst to him, her family has vowed to kill every member of his family.

The Tramp is an escaped convict who is mistaken as a pastor in a small town church.

Shortly after being made the executor of a wealthy man's estate, a man murders his benefactor. He then makes a play for the widow, who rebuffs him. To escape his arduous pursuit, she takes her little daughter on a trip but dies in an auto accident. The daughter is rescued but disappears. Her grandparents spend years looking for her, as does the executor who killed her father--if she's found she'll inherit the estate and he won't get a penny. He aims to see that she's never found, and if she is he plans to see that she doesn't live long enough to make a claim to the estate.

A tramp cares for a boy after he's abandoned as a newborn by his mother. Later the mother has a change of heart and aches to be reunited with her son.

Paul Drummond is adopted into a Franciscan Mission in California. Becoming of age, he believes he has a call to the priesthood. While at Theological Seminary, he becomes doubtful of his future and on the advice of his old Confessor he decides to become a physician. His roommate at college cherishes a little Crucifix given him by his mother. This Crucifix figures in the drama of events that finally convince Paul that the priesthood is his true calling.

When a famed matador is forced to become an outlaw, he seeks to get revenge on the dancing girl who betrayed him.
