Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ruthe Brady was discovered when she accompanied a candidate to Atlantic City for a bathing beauty pageant. She signed for a singing and dancing part in the floor show of the Copacabana Club in New York City. She later appeared on Broadway in such shows as "The Boys from Syracuse" and "By Jupiter". An MGM motion picture contract soon followed.
