Wan Tin-Sau is an actor who cannot seem to catch a break, since his only professional jobs are limited to being a movie extra. As well as being an actor, he is also the head of his village's community center.
Mother Meijia and her four cute chickens, Maggie, Dayu, Duoduo and Huanhuan, live happily in the forest together with other animals. One day, a human excavator team entered the forest, trees were cut down, and the homes of the cute chickens were also destroyed. Meijia's mother was forced to take the cute chickens on the road, planning to find a new home "over the mountain". But it is not easy to reach "the other side of the mountain". They must pass through the cities where humans live. The cute chickens are full of curiosity about everything in the city, but they don’t know that danger is approaching them...
Guoren travels the villages, selling goods of all kinds while he hunts for the man who stole the money for his son's care. Madou, one of the many abandoned children in the villages, hides in Guoren's truck so he can look for his father. A powerful but cathartic trip through rural China with a neorealist touch and non-professional actors who add authenticity to the story, prompting spontaneous laughter despite the challenging issues involved.
