The lifelong friendship of two rural Irish girls is put on the test when they grow up and leave for the big city, each with different life goals in mind.

Popular actress Violet Ray endures an abusive, alcoholic husband, Jim, for the sake of their deceased child's memory. She finds solace in an innocent friendship with Mabel Wright, a 10-year-old florist's daughter who brings her violets daily. A persistent suitor, Alec Lang, urges Violet to leave Jim for him. After Mabel is hit by a car and hospitalized, her father delivers a final bunch of violets and a message to Violet. This act of devotion rekindles Violet's sense of duty and "wifely love," prompting her to reject Alec and commit to remaining true to her daughter's memory while at Mabel's bedside.

In a small village in the Chodsko region, people live with daily worries about making a living. Many are dependent on work on the estate. Only the priest Jiří is able to stand up against the undignified conditions here, but he receives no gratitude, because the steward turns the villagers against him. Staněk, an engineer whose son Ondřej is studying at a grammar school, also works on the estate. The boy would like to continue studying law in Prague and is very surprised by his mother's wish for him to become a priest. His mother relies on the priest to talk Ondřej out of it. The second film of the trilogy (“Human Blood is Not a Water”, “Dmitro Goritsvit”, “People Don’t Know Everything”) tells about one of the first collective farms of Ukraine, the fight against the kulaks and the love of the communist Dmitro Goritsvit for Marta, the Petliurist's daughter, who guilty of the death of Dmitro's father.
